Checkout my 8 tips on how to network during the holiday season and start 2013 with a Bang!

It is the holiday season and you have the impression that all business stops. Is it true?

Not really. Business just changes a little bit during the holiday season and you need to know how to adapt. I have had over 20 years to learn how to adapt my networking skills during the holiday season.

Use this holiday season to start 2013 with a BANG!

Checkout my 8 tips on how to network during the holiday season and start 2013 with a Bang!

1) The holiday high school or college class reunion
Think about it. It’s been ten or maybe even 20+ years since you’ve been in the same room with many of your high school or college classmates. Sure they may see you as a clown just like you see them as a clown, but hopefully everyone has matured. The chances are good that they’re not all clowns anymore, and the chances are also good that some of them have achieved a relative amount of success in their careers. Some of them can be really great networking contacts. Take a gulp and swallow the unpleasant memories of your awkward high school  or college years and starting fresh. You never know who you may meet.
2) Family reunions during the holidays
Our lives wouldn’t be complete without bringing together the awkwardness of family members during the holidays. The holiday family reunion doesn't have to be boring. Just like a class reunion most of your family members probably have their own careers, and while you’re catching up with Uncle Phil (who has worked in his engineering firm for the last twenty five years but has had to make a recent transition because of unfortunate downsizing), ask him about his job search and the people he’s looking to for advice. Hopefully because they’re family, they’ll be willing to grant you a favor. You might also meet another family member who has some great connections for your business.
3) The time consuming holiday parties
It is that time of the year that you might get invited to a spouses work party, a friends holiday party, or a neighborhood holiday party. If you're like me. You can't wait for the holiday season to end. It just doesn't seem like I get enough rest because I'm always running. Maybe my attitude had something to do with it. A coupe years ago, I started networking at the holiday parties. Why sit and talk to the same person for hours, right? Now I approach the party as a speed networking event. It is kind of fun and almost every party I meet a valuable contact.
4) The holiday and end of the year volunteering opportunities
Volunteering can get you in front of some very successful people and volunteering is great for helping you to build up your network. This point may not be entirely enlightening, but consider where you are volunteering and focus your efforts. If you’re a writer, maybe volunteer to write a newsletter. If you’re savvy with sales, maybe volunteer to help a local organization with their holiday fundraiser. This could help you make new contacts and even boost your resume for future job applications.
5) Hmm . . . “I’ll scratch your back if you’ll scratch mine” method
Remember that this isn’t your first day at the rodeo and you already have a network built. You are a wealth of information! If you come across a fellow job seeker looking to expand their network, lend a helping hand and offer then some contacts or networking advice. You can ask them to return the favor by connecting you with some of their professional contacts. Also offer to post their business on your Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ Profiles. Hopefully they will recipicate and post your business on their Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ Profiles. The added exposure may help you get in front of the right person.

6) Get online and start a Google+ Hangout
What? Really? Yep, Google has made it easy for anyone who has a Google+ account to get online and start a Hangout. First think who do you want to connect with. If you want to connect with Kansas Basketball fans, create an event on Google+ to promote your Google+ Hangout. Invite a few Kansas Basketball fans and share your Hangout to the public. When the time comes for your Hangout, you can click the link and start connecting with your friends on your Google+ Hangout. It is easy and a fun way to network.

7) Visit networking groups during the holiday season
Visiting a business networking group during the holiday season can be fun and festive. Visit as many as you can. Who knows, you may meet the right group that you feel comfortable with and will want to join.
8) You can't find the right network group? Start the holiday season by starting your own network
Hmm . . . you like to network with cyclist and notice that there is no group of cyclist in your city. If you have found a networking group lacking in your hobby or interest start a networking group yourself! It could be K-State business school alumnus or KU alumnus who are business owners.  There are numerous ways to reach out and find people who have a similar interest– through social media or word-of-mouth to name a few. By creating your own group or starting a new event, either online or in person, you’ve just broadened your network. With Google+ introducing Google+ Communities last week, you could start a networking group really easy.
Hope these 8 tips help you this holiday season and you start 2013 with a BANG!

Need help selling your Olathe home? We have some experienced professionals that can help.

Dear Olathe FSBO,

Selling your Olathe home is a major decision that is not to be taken lightly. During the process of selling your Olathe home, you may encounter some hurdles. Don’t worry, we would like to lend you some help in overcoming those hurdles by introducing you to our “FREE” 3000 member strong Professional Referral Service, the “Kansas City Directory.”

The Kansas City Directory is aimed at helping homeowners overcome hurdles in the home selling process without giving up their equity. If you choose to request assistance, you’re by no means obligated to hire the contractor, but if you don’t hire them we want to know why. We want to know if their presentation, price or service is not up to your par.

Some possible hurdles in the home selling process that you may need some assistance in overcoming:

Getting Your Olathe Home Ready To Show - We have some great companies to refer you that can help clean your carpets, tidy up your home or completely stage it for buyers.

Pre-Inspection on YOUR Olathe Home - Many Olathe home sellers would like to know their homes imperfections prior to getting a laundry list from the buyer. If that is you, we have a couple inspectors that we can personally recommend.

Repairs on YOUR Olathe Home - We can recommend electricians, HVAC companies, roofers, foundation companies and many more to help finish repairs or complete the items on the buyer’s repair list.

Olathe Animal Removal - There is not too many things worse than having a wild animal living in your home while you're trying to sell it. We have a great animal removal service that we can recommend.

Mortgage and Banking Needs - Many times the potential home buyer will need financing and since 50% of the real estate transactions that fall apart are because of financing, we have a great mortgage officer and a banker that we can recommend that will help keep your deal together.

Movers Needed - We have a great mover that can help you move across town or across the country.

Sell Your Personal Items - Many home sellers have unwanted personal items that they may decide to get rid of. If this is you, we have a great auction service that can turn your unused items into cash.

Pricing Your Olathe Home - It is hard sometimes to price your home. If you have encountered that, We have an experienced REALTOR who will do a “FREE” pricing analysis for you.

If we can help, please feel free to make a business request on our website: http://kansascitydirectory.blogspot.com/p/find-business.html

How do you have a quick online conversation with friends and family? Email, Text, Instant Messaging, and Google+ Messenger

How do you have a quick online conversation with friends and family?

This is funny, I remember when snail mail was the typical form of communication with friends and family back in the 80's. That is if you didn't just pick up the phone and call your friends.

There were times that the phone made sense. There were also times when mail made sense. If you're sending an invitation obviously, the mail made sense.

To my teenage kids, mail would never make sense.

Have you ever thought what is the best form of a quick communication to your friends or family?

I had this conversation with my family about communication. Doesn't it make sense to have a family communication plan?

My wife said, "Email", just has my teenage boys were rolling their eyes and saying "Email! That is out mom. We send text messages now".

It is funny how my teenage kids describe email. Much how I described mail to my parents back in the 90's.

Email is slow and full of spam mail. That pretty much describes mail, right? I mean, that is how mail got the name "snail mail" right?

In my family discussion, It is funny that my daughter was the only one who mentioned instant mail. It is probably because she is too young for a phone and instant message is her only mode of communication. She uses the Google+ Messenger system. It is commonly know as "Google Chat".

I know you're probably familiar with email and text messaging, but have you sent a message via Google Messenger? If not, try it out. If you need to add the face-to-face element to the conversation, click on the camera icon. This will switch the conversation from 1 sentence messages to a video chat, commonly known as a Google Hangout.

An example of how I have used Google+ Messenger recently is a recent excursion to the grocery store. While I was in an appointment, my wife sent me a message, "Will you go by the grocery store on the way home?"

I replied, "Yes, what do you want me to grab?"

She replied back, "sauce and chips".

When I arrived at the grocery store, I noticed that they were stocked with her favorite chips but they were out of her favorite Mexican sauce. After a few messages back and forth, I hit the camera button and switched the conversation to a video chat. It worked out perfect because I pointed the camera to the various sauces and she picked the one she wanted me to get. If we kept sending messages back and forth, I think I would have completely described every Mexican sauce on the isle. Even if I called my wife, I would have still described every bottle of sauce 2 or 3 times. The video function of Google+ Messenger helped me save lots of time.

Have you tried out the Google+ Messenger? Google+ Messenger also has a group chat function. Messenger is part of Google+ Mobile.

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+ Tag Your Online Work by Claiming Google Authorship

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+

#4 Tag Your Online Work by Claiming Google Authorship

If you have original content that you have spread out between various blogs and websites, Google+ will allow you to connect your websites featuring your original content onto Google+.

The four advantages of tagging your work by claiming authorship are:
1) Obviously, helping your websites rank higher on a Google Search. This is kinda new and when the Authorship Ranking comes out soon, it will make more sense.

2) Additional Information will be added to your links that you have claimed. Yep, Google will add a name, avatar and a link to your Google+ profile on a link that comes up on a Google Search that you have claimed.

Matt Cutts had his name, avatar, and Google+ Profile added to the results of a Google+ Search.
3) And if the reader has demonstrated that they have approved your content , Google will add additional links of material you have authored, if the reader hits the back button. How does Google know that the reader has approved the content? Google has an approval rating system based off of the reader +1ing the content, commenting on the content, sharing the content, or reading the content for a determined amount of time (yes, Google knows how long the reader spent on your masterpiece. Basically, you're empowering the reader to find more of your writings.

4) By adding the Google+ Authorship rel tag, you will get more followers and help your readers engage with you easier.

Consistently writing content that is similar is very important for people who claim authorship, because when Google adds additional links to your works of art, you want the links to be kind of similar, don't you? Lets say the reader clicked to read content that you have written that is about blogging and when they hit the back button, the reader was directed to links about politics. Your reader probably would not be happy, right?

So how do you claim Authorship on Google+?

First, you must have a Google+ profile.

Second, add the domain of your masterpiece, on to your Google+ About Section (it is about 3/4 the way down the page.

Third, Add your byline to every page of your masterpiece. If it is a blog, add your byline to the blog footer. If it is a website, add the byline to the template footer. Make sure the byline is exactly how your name appears on Google+. For example, my Google+ Profile name is Chris Dowell, so my byline on my blog is Chris Dowell, not Chris Dowell - Master Marketer.

Fourth, verify that you have your Google+ Profile email address on the same domain. If you don't there are some steps to work around this.

Fifth, once you have completed the previous steps, you're ready to get started with the Google+ Authorship process. Click here to start the Google+ Authorship process.

Should David Glass of the Kansas City Royals and Scott Pioli of the Kansas City Chiefs leave? Is their homes on the real estate market?

Should David Glass of the Kansas City Royals and Scott Pioli of the Kansas City Chiefs leave?

I wrote post on another blog that I author back in October featuring the most expensive homes for sale in Kansas City on Zillow. The list included some super Mission Hill and Leawood luxurious mansions; as well as, condos down in the Country Club Plaza area.

A few readers asked if the homes of Scott Pioli and David Glass should be on the list. Nope, I didn't find that they had homes for sale in Kansas City. Do you think they should have their homes on the market? Have Pioli and Glass overstayed their welcome here in Kansas City.

Should the Kansas City Royal's, David Glass, sell to a new owner that will bring championship major league baseball to Kansas City?

How about the Kansas City Chiefs. Has the general manager, Scott Pioli, done a good job and should keep his job here in Kansas City, or should Clark Hunt look for a new general manager?

Great questions, what do you think?

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+ #3 Train Google that You're an Authority (3 of 13)

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+

#3 Train Google that You're an Authority (3 of 13)

What do we mean by writing, "Train Google"?

First, Google is constantly looking for relevant data to include in its search results. It does this searching by constantly indexing websites. Once Google finds a website of value and believes it is an authority website it will give the website special treatment.

What kind of special treatment will it give?

First, Google will index the website more often, looking for changes to include in its search results. That is why an authority website's new content seems to get onto Google Search results faster.

Second, Google will give an authority website A-1 real estate on the front page of a Google Search.

Third, Google will direct your Google+ post to more than a Google+ Search. You will also find your post on a Google Search, Google News, Google Maps, Google Local, YouTube, Blog Search and many more places.

Here are two examples of Google Search Results:
A Google Search Result has yielded a whole column of information about Oak Park Mall to the right of the normal search results. Google has determined that the Oak Park Mall is an authority for the key word string: Oak Park Mall.

Not all searches have a "People and Pages on Google+ related to . . ." box yet, but repeatedly posting on the same topic will help your page be listed when Google expands this feature in the future.
So how do you get your website to become an authority website on Google?

First, be consistent on your keywords added on your Google+ post and profile.

Second, act like an authority. Post on the same topic repeatedly and engage with visitors. By doing this you will condition Google that you're an authority.

Third, create content that will create action by your readers. Once a reader finds your post, you want them to first read it, then approve it by +1 your content, then you want them to comment on your content. Lastly, but most importantly, you want your reader to share your content with their circles.

Let me know how this works for you.

Join this Google Plus circle - This G+ circle consist of people who attended the HIRL event at last week.

First, Josh and I would like to thank you for attending the HIRL event last week. After reviewing the comments on Google Plus and Facebook, we feel it was a success. Have you viewed the G+ event wall? We have also started a G+ Page to help spread the work on the next HIRL event and help sponsors know a little bit about what a HIRL event is about. Feel free to visit our G+ Page, Kansas City Networking - #LearnG+KC.

Oh, yeah, how would you like to go to another HIRL event? Josh and I are working on hosting another event the beginning of January. If you have any ideas where to host our next HIRL event or you would like to help sponsor, please let Josh or myself know. It will need to be a venue that can handle at minimum 110 people.

Just a reminder, lets support our sponsors who helped me make our last HIRL event a successful event.
Anthony Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning
September Trible - ST Telecom
Scott Trible - KC Dream Garage
Suzie Savage - Tastefully Simple
Brad Larson - Vision PCS, Inc.

Please add the following circle to your circle so we can carry on the conversation from the HIRL event. These are people who attended the HIRL event. Click here to connect with the HIRL EVENT participants

What can you do when you open up the feed? You can first read the post in the feed. If you see a post you approve, you can +1 the post. When you +1 the post, you're approving the post. If you have a comment, feel free to express your opinion, whether it is positive or negative. You can also add to the post and ask questions, but please don't hijack the post with another agenda. If you really like the post, feel free to share the post with people following you. Ultimately, you want to get as many people to read, +1, comment and share your post, as possible.

If you start spamming your business sales pitch non-stop on Google+, don't be surprised that people will uncircle you and report your account to Google+. I have noticed that a few of you from the HIRL event have started spamming non-stop your sales pitch. Google+ is not Craigslist.

If you need help with Google+, feel free to send Josh and myself a message. We'll do our best to help. I'll post helpful G+ post and both Josh and I will be hosting a weekly Wednesday Hangout at noon (go to Kansas City Networking to connect with us on the G+ hangout around 12 on Wednesday - You may need to add Kansas City Networking to a circle first).

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+ #2 Expand Your Google Plus Circles (2 of 13)

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+

#2 Expand Your Google Plus Circles (2 of 13)

I'm not going to explain or debate Google+ circles. The idea of G+ circles is an awesome idea. I just wish you can have limited numbers of people in circles. Right now Google+ has a limit of 500 people in anyone circle of 5000 people total in all of your circles. Google says they have set these limits to control spammers. Although I agree with their rationale, I wish there was a way to have your account reviewed and have the circle limits increased. Rather than wishing or hoping Google makes changes to their circles, lets work with what we have.

First, do you understand Google, Search Plus Your World? Google believes that your search results on Google should be based off of your preferences, interest, and location. Why should a scuba diver in Florida get the same search results as a real estate agent in Kansas City, right?

The Google, Search Plus Your World update is a very good attempt by Google to personalize your search results by using Google+. Here is a search below that I did on Google.

The Google Search results above were heavily influenced by my Google+. How do I know? The people icon show that somebody or Google+ Page influenced my results. In this case, The VisitKC.com and KCChiefs.com websites were shared by the Kansas City Chiefs. Yes, I have the Kansas City Chiefs in my circles.

So what does this mean and how can you replicate the same results?

First, every social media channel has its purpose. My belief is Facebook is great for connecting with people you already know. Google+ is great for connecting with people you don't know. Matter a fact, Facebook actually sends out a message sometimes to the effect of "Do You Really Know This Person". The Google+ is great for connecting with people you don't know and their people search is a heck of a lot better. Google Plus actually encourages you to circle people you don't know that you have a similar interest with. It could be a hobby, a place you have worked, a college, or numerous other ideas. I even know people who have connected on Google+ because the have visited the same monument. The list of possible circles on Google+ are endless.

Unlike, Facebook, with Google, you want to expand your Google+ Circles. Connect to people who have similar interest or live in a geographic location. By having more people in your circles, you will affect more Google Search results. Hopefully you have posted about your business and added your business website and blog once or twice.

Second, now you're circling people and engaging in conversations, doesn't it make sense to circle the Ambassadors and Influencers? What does this mean, you ask?

You want to circle the people who are going to talk your business up and promote your business to customers, clients and the community. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Start this process and you will understand the new website ranking system that Google will be introducing in the future. I'll write about it in the next couple weeks, but for now, lets say it will be based off of connections.
Gone is the Page Rank System of Websites.

Lets connect on Google+. Follow the link to circle me on G+.

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+ #1 Use Your Customers Keywords

13 Ways to Increase Your Web Traffic by Using Google+

#1 Use Your Customers Keywords (1 of 13)

1) Add your customers keywords in your Google+ About Section on your G+ Page and Profile. What does this mean? Don't use the words you would use to find your business, use the words your customers and clients would use to find your business. You can use the auto compete tool in Google Search, the Google Keyword tool, or simply ask your clients and customers.

The Keywords in the post above demonstrates how the first sentence is in bold with the keywords.

2) Add your customers keywords in the first sentence of your Google+ post in bold. To bold your text, add the asterisk at the beginning and the ending of the sentence.
Here is a Google+ post that has been indexed by Google. The keywords are in the first sentence.

3) Add your customers keywords when labeling your pics and videos that you upload to Google+.
